T3W9 - P1 Art

This week, my P1 classes worked on creating their own paper sculptures of a certain part of their neighborhood with the cutting and folding techniques learnt in the past weeks (Theme: My Neighbourhood).

Students were first guided to understand the meaning behind the theme. They were familiar with the term neighbors, hence, building on that knowledge of closeness in distance, the neighborhood was introduced as the spaces and places near where we stayed. Some examples of places in the vicinity of Tampines was introduced to help them better visualize the possible places they could create in their own paper sculpture. These images also got the children excited about creating their own paper sculpture as they recognized the various locations (Tampines Hub, playgrounds, etc.) and started asking about the 'buildability' of the places they had in mind!

Given the choice to create any part of their neighborhood, students got the chance to engage in idea generation. Many of them went ahead with re-creating a playground near their house with the paper strips provided. However, I was still pleasantly surprised by some of their unique ideas as it reflected the interesting observations students made of their surroundings in their daily lives! For instance, a student shared with me that he was building the construction site near his house, while another worked on creating the coffee shop near her house. Students displayed a keen sense of social awareness when they shared with me why they wanted to build these places.

While some students creatively used the paper strips in ways that were not explored in class and discovered new ways to make their paper sculpture sturdier, other students faced difficulties bringing their ideas into fruition. It was heartening to see the children helping their classmates, and I even had a few pair of students who collaborated with each other to co-construct a paper sculpture together.

In re-creating the various neighborhood locations in the form of paper sculptures, students experimented with the folding techniques acquired in class and got the chance to directly apply these skills in arranging and creating their own paper sculpture.
